Which Table Base for Marble, Wood and Laminate Tops?

Top & Base Matching

A marble top weighs roughly six times what a compact laminate top of the same size weighs. Assuming one base will carry both is the most expensive mistake in restaurant specification. This guide covers the right base type, base mass and fixing detail for each top material.

Weight comparison of table top materials

Figures below are for an 80 cm round top. A square top of the same width weighs about 27% more.

Top materialThicknessWeight at 80 cm roundLoad on base
Marble / natural stone30 mm~41 kgHigh
Granite30 mm~44 kgHigh
Ceramic / sintered stone12 mm~17 kgMedium
Solid wood30 mm~13 kgMedium
Compact laminate12 mm~7 kgLow
Tempered glass10 mm~13 kgMedium

The rule is simple: as the top gets heavier, the base spread and plate thickness grow; as the top gets lighter, the mass of the base becomes the critical figure. A light base is the wrong answer at either end.

Marble and natural stone tops

The problem with marble is not its weight but its brittleness. A base that contacts the stone at a few points will produce micro-cracking over time. A wide top plate is therefore essential — aim for at least 25 × 25 cm bearing against the underside of the slab.

  • Specify cast iron or a weighted steel base.
  • Use felt or rubber between the top plate and the stone; never metal directly onto stone.
  • If dowels are set into the underside, keep the hole depth below half the slab thickness.
  • For marble tops of 90 cm and above, plan a cross foot or twin columns rather than a single post.

Suitable ranges: cast iron table bases and heavier metal table bases.

Compact laminate and HPL tops

Compact laminate is light, weather-resistant and forgiving of impact — and precisely because it is light, it tips easily. Here the base is not carrying the load, it is ballasting the table.

For terrace and garden use, choose a weighted cast base or a steel base that can be filled. In exposed, windy locations the base should weigh at least twice as much as the top.

Solid wood tops

Wood expands and contracts with humidity. Do not lock that movement when you fix the base: leaving at least one of the fixing holes as a slotted hole prevents seasonal movement from splitting the top.

Visually, a wood top works with a wooden base or a matt black metal base; polished chrome rarely sits well against solid timber.

Glass tops

Metal must never bear directly on tempered glass. Apply a full-face rubber pad to the top plate and use suction pads or a bonded fixing. Because the base stays fully visible through a glass top, the choice becomes a design decision as much as a structural one — this is where the design range earns its place.
